Forum Rules

1. Do not flame, trash, or insult people, opinions, other books, etc.
If you have valid points to make in an argument then please make them as politely as possible, without getting hostile or insulting towards others. Please do not make personal, racist or sexist insults, or goad people into arguments.

2. Use proper English when posting.
As a literary community, we value good spelling and grammar. A well-composed post shows that you are reading through your argument before submission and makes a good impression. Good spelling and grammar also make our search tool more effective and help non-native speakers to improve their English. Mobile phone/Internet style text speak (txt spk) is not permitted.

3. Post with substance.
Don't post something that has no point, and don't post just to raise your post count. In the case of old threads (which haven't been posted in for at least two months), you may only add a new post if you have something new to bring to the discussion, or to raise a point that has not already been covered. Do not post just to agree with a previous statement or single-word answers. Please consider carefully the content of your post before posting it.

4. Do not double post.
A double post is when a user posts twice in a row in the same thread, without a different user posting in between. If you have something to add to your original post, use the “edit” button. Please do not make two posts in a row to respond to two different points; instead use two paragraphs in one post.
Exception: Double posting is allowed in the "Anything Goes" sub-forums. On other sub-forums, a "double post" may be allowed in reasonable circumstances (e.g. if nobody has replied to your post within a week). However, you may not double post just to "bump" your thread to the top of the list. Unnecessary double posts will be merged at the Moderators’ discretion.

5. Do not create duplicate topics.
Over the years, many things have been discussed on the forum. Before you start a new thread, please take a few minutes to look around and see if the topic appears to have been discussed already. Take a look at the sub-forum where it is most likely to be found, and use the forum’s search function to see if you can spot an existing thread on the subject.

6. Post in the correct sub-forum
The specific sub-forums were created to divide posts into appropriate sections. Please try to ensure that you post in the one most suitable for the topic you want to discuss. When posting a topic, please state clearly in the topic title what your thread is about. If you post in the wrong sub-forum, the thread will most likely be moved to the correct place by a Moderator.

7. Stay on topic
We understand that conversation naturally progresses after a while from the original topic, and that is acceptable. However, deliberately changing the topic in the middle of the conversation is not allowed. If a topic does naturally progress far enough that it justifies its own thread, mods may split the topic and leave a note in the old thread about where the conversation is continued. If you notice someone straying off-topic in a way you think is unreasonable (particularly in the HDM and Pullman forums) then please report the post.

8. Do not back-seat moderate
We value the experience and commitment of our long-term members, who often spot possible breaches of the forum rules before the official Moderators. If you notice a possible abuse of the forum rules, you should inform a Moderator so that he or she can take the appropriate action. Please do not attempt to deal with the matter yourself.

9. Do not use the names of Pullman’s characters in your username.
To avoid confusion, it is forbidden to use the names of characters as your username. Please come up with an original name, use a name from a different series, use your own name or variations of it.

10. Do not ask us to do your homework.
Many people study Pullman’s works, particularly His Dark Materials. On occasion, someone ventures onto the board asking us to answer their essay question or do their assignment. We don't want our boards used in this way and any topic asking us to do your homework will be locked.
