i agree... it seems just thrown in to avoid contradiction, regardless of how absurd it is... they didn't even fully explain why she couldn't read it...

Come to think of it, they didn't really explain how she came to read it in the first place... I mean that is more remarkable since it takes a lifetimes dilligent study and a load of books of meaning (plus hours of laborious referencing and figuring) to be able to read it properly, and she seemed to pick it up perfectly after messing around with the hands a bit.
I have a theory about this though. Someone in the books (I believe it was an angel) said she could read the alethiometer because she needed to, so I think the Dust itself imparted this knowledge onto her, or allowed her to understand the complex symbol 'ladders'. After her objective was accomplished, the ability was withdrawn.

I thought that was explained in the books When she weas asking why she couldn't read it anymore, one of the angels i think it was, said that she could only read it because they needed her to, and that she'd lost the knowledge because it was no longer immediately needed, and so she would have to learn it all again

You did? I just came up with it while I was writing the post, so if you said it somewhere else I probably subconsciously stole the idea...

yeah, it said she read it by grace, and now she'd have to gain it back through work, which further proves my "contributor to society/dust idea"

I was dismayed that she couldn't read it any longer because at least if she could she would be able to ask if will was ok.
I understand that she couldn't be allowed to read it or she could of asked it how they stayed together but it could have just not given her the answer. Because it did that before.

prequel/sequel?
If memory serves, Mr. Pullman said something about the book being about Lyra growing, and something about her life in the alternate world she's in.....and ALSO about the other background stories about Serafina Pekkala and Iorek...... and I head it also mentioned someplace as a "prequel".
in the way that LO serves as a lead in to the "Book of Dust", and talks about little things from the past sort of creeping up into the future, and it all having some meanings, I think that past and future (future as in post-Amber Spyglass) events will connect.
I could be wrong, but we'll see..........
