What genre of writer is Philip Pullman?

To clear things up, I'm not asking whether HDM is a children's book or not (we all know full well it isn't) but whether (taking into account all his other books) PP is primarily a childrens book writer or not. I say he is!

I think he is. Although I haven't read any of his books other than HDM and the Sally Lockhart series, his other books do look like children's books-really short, simpler stories. As HDM are only three books out of everything he's written, I would say he is primarily (not completely!) a children's book writer. Not that there's anything worng with that. Children's books can be good too.

the average age of everyone here must be 15/16. Now I know 15/16 year olds aren't children but at what age did you read the books? I'm guessing 2 years ago so that's 13/14. Books that 13/14 years olds read generally don't appeal to "adults" (I know there's exceptions but shh!)

Not me! I love children's books, and TV. Adult books are so much more pedestrian in their ideas.

I would like to raise my voice in protest at this labelling buisness. I don't think it matters. I've recommended PP's books to an 11 year old, 21 years olds and a 47 year old. I don't think he likes being labelled, either. But as far as marketing goes, you have to say his books are aimed at a children's market (apparently 'young adult' in the U.S., which is how he says he got away with all the sex in White Mercedes...)
I'm going to watch him on the South Bank Show tonight, we'll see if he has anything interesting to say on this topic...

BTW, Young Adult is teenage, although some books filed in there are more for 10-14. At our age, most of us read only notable YA (i.e. HDM) or Adult-filed stuff.

Me too. I occasionally (alright, I'll admit it, frequently) read books that are meant for a much younger age range. Sometimes I feel a bit weird about it, like when I go look in the children's section at the library and it's filled with five year olds, but there's actually a lot of really good children's books! I think people who won't read them are missing out.

I agree - if it's good, go for it! Never be put off by categories because the person who invented the categories dosen't have a clue what type of books you're into.

I love children's books! But I primarily read YA- because I am, in fact, a Young Adult! whudathunkit? Did you know "adolescent" means "innocent adult" sound the word out slowly and you will get it.
