There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all

It was on epistemology, philosophical influences on HDM, representations of truth & knowledge etc.
There wasn't anything like it about at the time but this is coming out soon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0812 ... 991_snp_dp
Hows your project going?

h) Pullman's storytelling, the way he keeps you enthralled in the story and his ability to transmit his character's emotions and states of mind so empathically. Also, just saying "fantasy" doesn't do it for me... I fantasized about Bears, zeppelins, other worlds, spectres, inter-universal wars, angels, witches and an almost infinite etcetera from the moment I finished the first book. The world created in HDM took on a life of its own in my imagination. If I felt intrigued by the religious aspects of the story, and undeniably loved the plot, it was the fantasy of it that made me come back to it again and again.
Which character is for you the most interesting? (1 answer)
d) Will. Since you demand just one answer, I guess it has to be Will. Of all the characters I feel he's the one that has to make the toughest choices.
Did you identify yourself with one of the characters?
a) Yes. At different readings and different times I've identified with different characters. I've always felt sympathy for Will, and Asriel has always been the character I understand the best. Lee Scorsby is probably my favorite character though, he's the one I want to identify with the most.
