TBOD: A Sequel Book After TBOD?

This is what Mr Pullman said when he was interviewed by HisDarkMaterials.org:

Philip: I will be writing another book later on when I have finished the book I am doing now. I will be writing another book set in the same world and dealing with some of the same characters, it won't be a continuation of the story, this particular story*, but it will be set in the same world and dealing with the same sort of things.

*That's interesting, does that mean there will be a follow-on? I do hope so, there were many unconcluded issues in the book, such as the closing of the windows, the construction of the Republic of Heaven, Xaphania as a whole, the reason why two windows could not stay open, as opposed to one (how much difference could it make), and many other things. What do you people think?

here is the link, and I'm not sure whether this is the American or British format, but the interview was on 08/10/06. It depends on where the site owner lives.

If you ask me, that question was put to Pullman several years ago. I suspect it is him referring to The Book of Dust a long time before he started writing it. Our friend Ryan has been rather misleading, in that the site has been redone over at hdm.org, so in all probability it was old stuff being reposted. We haven't heard anything else to suggest a follow on to TBoD, and I don't expect there to be one. Although it would be nice if there was :)

I think you're right, Ian. I suspect that's an old quote, and it is TBOD that he is talking about. The book he talks about finishing first would be "The Scarecrow and his Servant". (is that title right?)

Yep, that's the right title. I do wish Mr Pullman could elaborate his answers so that we can have a remotely clear vision of what TBOD will contain.

i wonder if most of the things he said around the time of the publication of TAS still hold... he's had so many other projects since, his own stories as well as adaptations to review and approve of. he also has new ~influences, e.g. citing the newest guidebook as his own hdm-encyclopaedia...

Lol, I have a brilliant idea. As you mentioned the influences thing, maybe we should each send an individual email to persuade him to write about a things. Some people may want to include Will and Lyra together, others may want to know certain things about Mulefa etc.

err... conflicting interests...

Lol, that's what I saw on Cittagazze forums, someone seems to think everything will go great with Will and Lyra.

On the main page of Bridge to the stars it says that PP is currently writing something, this wa only a few days ago. Could this be a real HDM sequel, not TBOD?

Pullman's writing the Book of Dust. As far as I'm concerned there is no 'real' HDM sequel as you put it aesahaettr101 - only this "companion novel". Frankly I don't think after the effort involved in TBoD that Pullman would be interested in writing anything else HDM related. He's a storyteller, and I suspect after this, he'll feel the stories have been told, and he'll want to move on.

It sounds like the fourth installment will not continue to be "crucial" to the development of the story used in the first three novels; what is more probable is that, as others have suggested, is that it will simply document another adventure of Lyra's (more elaborately than Lyra's Oxford).
