Who is your favourite villian in HDM? Mine has to be Father MacPhail.

I think Father Gomez for me. They're all pretty sinister aside from Iofur. Not that I don't love Iofur. But Gomez just seems so screwed up and I always get a chill when he blesses the children in Cittagazze for helping him.

It has to be Metatron for me. He's the guy calling all the shots from the Clouded Mountain. Of course, why isn't the Authority on the poll? Surely his deception of the other angels is one of the oldest acts of villainy in the universe.

Thats why there is an other box so people can pick that and say "I think the Authority" or whatever other villian that I have not put on there

I don't like any of the villains so much but if i have to say someone then it's probably Mrs.Coulter.

Why isn't Asriel on there? He's an anti-hero! He represents the Devil! Even if he doesn't go around killing people, he's still pretty villanous.

Yes! Yes! I was looking to vote for Asriel. He definately qualifies as a villain. But now that I think about it, it could go either way, he is very evil, he has his own agenda, he eliminates anyone in his way, and his only motive to do anything is whether or not he himself benefits from it. But one could argue that without him, Lyra would never have discovered Dust, traveled to other worlds, met Will, or fulfilled her destiny.

There are different types of evil, aren't there? He was certainly never a goody-goody. And he was being purely evil from the Authority's perspective. That's an interesting point, actually. Even though Pullman reversed the roles and such-like, Asriel is still the Devil in the eyes of God.

Yes, he is the absolute enemy of the Authority. But he does other villinous actions to the other side as well, like severing Roger and his dæmon to open the window to Cittàgazze.

That's what's so interesting about him, and Mrs Coulter for that matter. It's what marks a complex and realistic villian.

Gomez is creepy and so is Boreal. One of them, I guess

That's a good point too, Mrs. Coulter is the same way, sort of, in NL she is a definate villan. She changes though, by TAS she goes so far as to give her life for the rebellion.

I think she gave her life for Asriel, not the rebellion. She never really became good after all, for I think that was the point Pullman was trying to make about daemons: you can't completely change your character just like you can't change your daemon's form after it has settled.

Wasn't it given more so for Lyra then Asriel and the rebellion?

i was thinking i like Asriel too. not becuase he's really a villian, but he is a bad guy in the sense of he killed Roger.... i dunno, i almost put mrs. coulter but then i changed my mind and put other. :?

It was a tough one but i had to go for father Gomez. The simple way he looks at the situation involving Lyra and the church makes him a lot more twisted than some of the other villans.

Definitely Mrs Coulter. She has all the best qualities for good old fashioned villiany.
