Will's behavior

Discuss the concluding book of the trilogy

Will's behavior

Postby lostinthought451 » Sun May 04, 2003 12:40 am

:o don't you think Will changed a Lot from the beginning of TSk to TAS? He seemed almost haughty and cold in TSK and was a lot nicer in TAS. Maybe Lyra changed him, just like he changed Lyra.

Yeah he definately changed. At the beginning of TSK he was pretty mean to Lyra.

Lyra and Will both grow up a lot throughout the books. The whole innocence to experience thing...I know in TAS there's lots of references to them growing up and not being children anymore. I think he became nicer (especially to Lyra) as he became more mature.

Yeah at the beginning he was indifferent and Lyra was partially afraid. It wasnt till when Will spoke to Pan that PP really started making a difference in the attitude towards the two.

Not through aging but through expierience. The whole book series is only a handful of weeks long....

They matured a lot emotionally, not necessarily physically. Although I think someone figured out how long the events of the books take, and it's actually a little longer than that, maybe a few months?

No Way! In TAS, when they're in the world of the dead, Lyra reference's Roger as only being there a few weeks. Assuming few = 3 or so, plus like 2 weeks for the end of the book if you look at it proportionally.

Will's indifference was probably some kind of defence mechanism. Think about all the stuff he went through, and how he almost had to become semi-ferrel in order to survive. It probably took him a while to fully accept and trust Lyra. And there is also the growing up through experience thing.

Actually, I just kept track of it while reading TGC and TSK a second time through, and TAS isn't too hard...

The ENTIRE trilogy 150 days, or 5 months (assuming that Will's journey with the bears to the Himalyas took 4 weeks), but I think you guys are talking about two different time frames.

The entirety of TSK takes just 6 days, and TAS up to them boarding the boat leaving the World of the Mulefa is (4)+1 week and 5 days.

So the time frame you're taking about is 6 weeks, 4 days. One and a half months.

Back to topic...

Mmm, before Lyra, Will simply doesn't trust anyone. The one person in the entire world he feels he can remotely depend upon is his old piano teacher. Thus we he says 'Lyra is the best friend I've ever had' it's not really much

Oh, see I was forgetting things like boat rides and trips where he skips the part. Thanks.

yah, at the beginning, will's only friends are his mother and his piano teacher. he has never had any friends his own age. and lyra becomes his friend, and he becomes more compassionate to others.

And now the poor lad can't even play the piano. That's why it would really piss me off if I lost some fingers.

Will went by boat...a loaded-down heavy steamboat, though.
