Another generic best games ever poll.

Postby Qu Klaani » Thu Feb 26, 2009 4:08 pm

I like voting in the polls on Empire, and this one caught my eye. So yeah, best five games ever...

The Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time
Half-Life 2
Grim Fandango
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Sonic the Hedgehog 2

I reckon nostalgia is playing a pretty big part here, but whatever. It's also making me long to play OoT again, but I think an 8th time would be pushing it. Other than OoT I've replayed all these games in the last couple of years, in fact I've probably replayed more old games in recent times that I've bought new ones. I worry I'm becoming a bit too nostalgic, or I'm just poor, hard to say.

I loved the Zelda game, played it on just about every version (including the DS most recently, thanx to my teenage daughter) but I never beat it. I loved Mortal Kombat when it came out WAYYY in the day, but I don't really play fightin games. My kids got the Harry Potter games, did those, they were kinda fun. But I played the original Pong, and I have had the enjoyment of watching the technology progress. I was SO addicted to Donkey Kong back in the day, I hope I can find a DS version of that one.

There was some dinosaur hunter game my hubby used to love, but I can't remember what it was now. That one aggrivated me till I got good at it.

It's because you are poor Qu Klaani. There are lots of great games out there. Get Madworld next month dammit!

Anyway it's extremely difficult for me to pick 5 games. If I was allowed to pick 5 for every platform I've owned then I could do it.

1)Half-life 2
2)Ocarina of Time
3)Monkey Island 2
4)Super Mario World
5)Street Fighter 2

Unlike Qu Klaani I've gone for Monkey Island instead of Grim Fandango because I am right and he is wrong. Grim is the second best adventure game.

It's a good game. Beautiful with a good story. The gameplay could use some work though, it was an extremely ambitious game in that regard (the team member and enemy AI was woeful) and I have alot of optimism for the sequel which should be out by the end of the year. Seriously the last level is so epic. It's a 20 hour + game so you really need to give it a chance to grip you and to get used to it's short comings. :)

It was one of the most well-developed mythologies for any single release (ie. there were no books, movies or other games in the same mythology). And the story was very nice. A thing I loved about the game was that it really felt like a "mature" game - not because of the (very light) sexual content, but the overall story and feel of the game. The developers weren't "holding back" to try appealing to a larger audience, which a lot of developers sadly do. If you try to please everyone, you appeal to no one (or however that goes).

The gameplay did have some flaws (the friendly AI, for one), but overall the possitives vastly outnumbered the negatives in my opinion.

okay, i admit i allowed the short comings and my poor ability at it to overcome the admirable story-line.
i apologise to mass effect

My top 5 was kinda rubbish and girly, so I won't even post it here. But after I voted I realised I'd completely forgotten about pc games. I would have voted for Lemmings and Myst :(

So they've finally published the results of this. I rather thought they had forgotten. *browses*

I've played...a mere 14%. I'm very saddened that Kingdom Hearts isn't on the list

88% here :P although I probably only cleared about 50%.

It's a good list that was broken by gaming noobs who think CoD4 is better teh best fps eva. Alot of games were supported by their hardcore fans, FF7, Civ, MGS 4 and Street Fighter spring to mind. My top 5:

1)Half-life 2 (15)
2)Ocarina of Time (8)
3)Monkey Island 2 (dnf, a mistake in their parser is the only explanation)
4)Super Mario World (1)
5)Street Fighter 2 (6)

Great to see Speedball 2 in there at 100. ~*iguana*~ I loved that game on the amiga with my stupid one button joystick.

I started reading by checking where OoT was, and saw that they were slagging off Wind Waker.

Apparently the Empire Writers and the retards who voted were in synergy, bunch of philistines.
