Lee Scoresby Wow

Discuss the second book of the trilogy

Lee Scoresby Wow

Postby BristolCity1988 » Mon Jan 21, 2008 9:08 pm

Ok I first read these books when I was 15/16 I think so that was four years ago now, I am going through the books again now a much more mature and emotional man (I cried at the end of Gladiator and Bridge to terbithia haha) and having just finished the second book have to say the bit with Lee Dieing blew me away, yes it is so sad but not just that the way it is written is amazing.

I love the connection between Hester and Lee the way they are such a good unit and work together you can really feel the bond between them and it is so sad as you know what is coming fantastic writing I am sure all this has been said but that is my two pence worth.

I like the whole last stand thing. If they do make a movie of the book, I hope they do a good job.

I remember hoping desperately that he came out alive (He might've if Serafina Pekkala had come quicker...) but I knew he wouldn't. The whole time I roared "USE THE FLOWER SERAFINA GAVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I was sooo gutted when Lee died. Not only was it a reely sad moment (when Hester moves to Lee and puts her face against his  ) but he was one of my favrouite characters throught the books.

Owatts, I don't think there is another topic like this, the search function only brought up this topic.

And yeah I stopped reading for about 10 minutes after Lee and hester die :(
Hush, the babies are sleeping, the farmers, the fishers, the tradesmen and pensioners, cobbler, schoolteacher, postman and publican, the undertaker and the fancy woman, drunkard, dressmaker, preacher, policeman, the webfoot cocklewomen and the tidy wives. Young girls lie bedded soft or glide in their dreams, with rings and trousseaux, bridesmaided by glowworms down the aisles of the organplaying wood.

It's super sad, because of the way PP wrote it. Yeah, Hester put her face against Lee's.

And then they died.

I can't believe Lee died! That was so sad. I liked how it said Hester pushed her proud little face into Lee.

I wasn't really hit too hard by Scoresby getting killed.

Actually none of the deaths did that. And none of the events in TSK or NL managed either. I guess I must have been saving it all up for TAS.

I'm reading the trilogy to my daughter and got totally choked when Lee died. Mind you, I had trouble with the death of Dobby too!

Yeah I admit, when I read of Lee Scoresby's death, that was the first time a book ever made me cry! The ending of The Amber Spyglass did the same thing lol

Even after I read the end of that chapter I still harbored some hope that Lee would some how live... It was so sad, Lee was definitely one of my favorite characters. I guess it's the whole western "hero but not on purpose" stereotype he fits so well... Lee's not in it for any ideal, he has hopes of retiring off somewhere nice and quite, he's just making his way as best he can with his balloon. He's completely loyal to his friends, "a man of his word" that feels morally obligated to his contracts and without a doubt one of the most selfless and courageous characters in the story. I mean you just feel that Lee doesn't deserve to die alone, shot to death on some cold and barren rock slope in a world he doesn't belong to.

There's few scenes so emotionally powerful as that one in HDM.
Spoiler:
I think the one that's most comparable is the scene where Lyra almost gets cutt of from Pan. That one was pretty intense too

I was thinking about Lee's death - I remembered but no-one else I spoke to did. Lee being

eaten by Iorek. It sounds gross at first but was actually written quite beautifully, like this was a great honour to Lee and Iorek.

Just wondering if anyone else remembers this scene (its at the start of Amber Spyglass) and what they thought of it?
